What happened while I was gone? Go to a funeral, and come back to mayhem... What was this big post I hear reference to?
Oh well. My grandfather died last Sunday, so I drove up Wednesday from Ohio to Kenosha, Wisconsin, home of AMC... It was ok, but I had to drive about ten hours with unhappy passengers—my 1-yr old, my 5-yr old, and the wife. The funeral was Thursday, and I was a pallbearer. Whee. Friday, I headed back home. Yay. Arrived home around 1am, after many more stops than I would have preferred.
Our hotel sucked ass, it was a Super 8, which I thought was the name of an archaic home video film, but apparently the hotels are about the same era. The entire place smelled of cheap cleaning supplies, a previous guest had left a few pizza boxes in the tiny fridge, which smelled pretty ripe, and the door took a body-slam to open.
However, the saving grace of the trip, and the stay there, was the AMC cars in the parking lot. Unbeknown to me beforehand, there was a big AMC (and any other cars made in Kenosha) car meet that weekend. Sadly, I wasn't going to be around Saturday or Sunday to see the main events, or even the swap meet on Friday, but there were a good amount of nice cars in the parking lot over the two nights we were there.
I wish I could have been to the car show. I was told they expected 3000 cars. Perhaps another Oppostle was there and could share photos...
I have more to post about, but it will have to wait for now.
BTW, I want the AMX.

The flares just look silly since the wheels are narrower then the flares by a lot...

Um, honestly it's best we don't talk about it because it wasn't that good to see and the atmosphere wasn't very comfortable during that. That's if you're talking about the big post I think you are.

Wait when was this? How did I miss it?

Someone made a post about the Friend Zone, it was rather personal, got crossed posted to Groupthink, a Jezebel subblog. End of the story.

Last night, around this time. Post was kind of misunderstood as it wasn't worded the best and it kind of turned into a shitstorm and it was not pretty.

One of these things just doesn't belong here.

is it still up? Or did they pull it down??

Is it still up?
Im pissed I missed this honestly

They deleted it because of reasons. It wasn't pretty and the OP was hurt pretty bad by a lot of the comments, because they weren't expecting what happened.

I came very close to having an AMC Spirit AMX as my first car, but it needed a new air pump to pass emissions. Too bad.

oh god. That shit usually doesnt happen here.
Was it Oppos fault or the fact it got shared to Groupthink in your opinion.
(sorry for all the questions. I just live on oppo and cant believe I missed this ordeal)

I'll drop who OP was. I didn't read the post but in all seriousness, he's still growing up and didn't deserve the treatment from what I understand - It was K-roll talking about teenage/college time girl problems. He was the typical level of dumb you expect from an 18-22 y/o who is just starting to understand that relationships are far more complicated than something like "if action a == true then result == b". Nothing earth shaking but a post got shared to the jezebel Oppo (groupthink) without context or thinking and things went downhill fast.

I think the worst part happened after it was shared, I was monitoring it trying to not get involved. Eventually the sharer realized their mistake and unshared it and apologized. I don't mind the questions. I'm not naming any names to keep anonymity with this because I don't need anyone being mad at me for anything,

Wow, I saw it early on, but I didn't know it turned into a shitstorm.

Yeah, no problem. I can't really tell if it's a good thing that you missed this or not but it was pretty crazy last night.

Alright I get ya now. Thanks for your help. I live here on oppo and can't believe I missed this honestly. Especially since I always click those posts to see if I could either help or learn more.
Anything related to jezebel is kinda scary so I could imagine.
Thanks

We're really not that scary.
I was the one who made the share. I was also the one who realised my mistake, unshared it, apologised, and then had to clean up the mess of other people sharing other comments from the post (I had to go back and unshare those). Although there were some serious issues in the original post which had to be addressed, the results of my share were disastrous. What I expected was individuals coming forward to offer personal anecdotes which would help illuminate the flaws in the original post. What happened instead was a bunch of immature name calling which never should have happened. I'm pretty displeased with those who engaged in it.
Both the original post and my own share underscore a point I was trying to get across to K: you fuck up, you apologise, you make sure you don't do it again, and you move on.

My uncle has one of these. AMC AMX right?

Do you know who cross-posted it? That's a pretty clear violation of the "Don't be a shit-stirrer" rule.
![]() 07/28/2014 at 13:22 |

Kat Callahan (I think that's how you spell it?). She removed the crosspost, but someone else had already shared a comment, and those doors don't close once opened.

I'm sort of on the side of "Look, we're a community, but if you share personal things, expect them to blow up". I don't think anyone had malintent in the whole thing, but you go opening up yourself to public you're inviting people you wouldn't otherwise like to hurt your self esteem. If you can't take it, don't do it here, or learn to be more objective.
I've seen way, way more volatile internet communities that were much tighter-knit than this one though (especially back in the early 2000s when this was common use of the internet) and it still blows my mind that this place stays civil (given how large it is) while maintaining such a tiny and vague set of rules. Most places that have been around this long, go through much more shit and end up with a much better, clear ruleset of appropriate content that codifies what isn't easy to understand.
And those places aren't backed by a big media conglomerate.

In my opinion it is not as simple as labeling it one way or another. It does not seem to be a clear violation at all, unless you are looking for one. I've been in touch with Kat offline, this appears to be a huge misunderstanding and Dusty's post on the other post has a lot of detail which is missing here. (Read through these threads: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/question-on-cr… )
From my understanding (this is all second hand, but second hand from Kat, Dusty and other sources) I have come to the following conclusions.
Kat's heart was in the right place. As were several GT'ers. But not all of them. As soon as it became clear that there was a clear difference of opinion between certain parties Kat unshared it, but others from GT started sharing comments to GT (this would be where in my mind some actual shit stirring may come into play). Kat apologized to K-roll directly, which was accepted. And the post was deleted and everything seemed to die off from there.
At this point all of it seems to be resolved from the terms of the parties involved on Oppo. We may need to keep a look out for flareups from here, but I want to say that both Dusty and I are under the impression that the intent from Kat was clearly to help, not to cause this incident.

Another forum I'm on has a 'gentleman's section (there are ladies also)' for this reason where you can post stuff and be open with whatever's going on or general NSFW stuff but is only viewable by people who have requested to join and agreed to the fact content may offend and you agree not to be offended (but posts within still have to be not too or overly offensive). Contents are not discussed on the open forum and aggressive tones or abuse aren't allowed. It's pretty much self moderated and works under the threat of 'abuse it and it will be taken away'.
